Workshop on
Semantic Interoperability
Brønnøysund, Norway
Background
This workshop was organised by the Brønnøysund Register Centre, the Norwegian government agency responsible for a number of national regulatory and registration schemes for business and industry. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry for Innovation, together with the European Commission.
In the invitation to the workshop, the Norwegian hosts outlined the initial objectives:
Interoperability covers a wide range of issues. This workshop addresses an important challenge concerning the development of eGovernment services: reliable identification of data. Identification is crucial to make communication between computers and computer-systems possible. Such issues are often referred to as "Semantic Interoperability".
Nearly a hundred participants took part in the two day workshop, and explored a number of issues in detail in five working groups. I acted as rapporteur for the working group examining pan-European solutions to semantic interoperability problems. My report and slides can be found on this site shortly.
