Introduction
Jack of all trades?
I am a civil servant of the European Union, and have been extremely lucky in that my professional life to date has been immensely varied. Although considered a disadvantage in some disciplines, being a 'Jack of all Trades' has served me well.It has given me a wide range of skills - in politics, communications, international relations, publishing, administration, linguistics, training and of course, information technologies - and enabled me to always keep an eye on the wider canvas, beyond the speciality of the day.
I have always been extremely concerned about the relationship between business management and technologists, and have always argued for a very close collaboration between both, with each accepting and working with the strengths of the other.
For four years until 2004, I headed the Information Resources Management service in the European Parliament, responsible for establishing policies in the fields of information architecture and data standards.
